How to shift on a crotch rocket?

I was want to know how to shift on a motorcycle because I might get one in a month. Its going to be a Honda CBR 600. I don't get how to shift. You go down to neutral and then up and then you pass neutral??? If you want to down shift and if you we're in 5th gear and you want to shift down to first you have to press it down 4 times??? help I don't get this
