What's an alternative to leather when looking for protection on a motorcycle?

So I'm 18 and just learning to ride motorcycles to the point where I've decided I need protection. What are people wearing with their "crotch rockets" so they don't look like they ride a harley but also have protection. My dad has a harley davidson and he's constantly trying to get me to wear ugly leather.
